That's really cool!! Your second article is what I am more familiar with... Think about this, if you have two 'magnetic' sensors they don't even have to be very good sensors by themselves. The Key is that they are consistent in creation, either manufactured or from life. Then you amplify the heck out of them in a way that everything that is common mode to the sensors will drop-out and disappear. This mathematical trick will greatly increase your signal to noise ratio and now you have a very good sensor. Biology has a way of doing this remarkably well with a bundle of nerve endings at the sense location.
I guess this would be more about seeing a person's aurora. What color is yours?
It would be really cool if one could visually navigate.
