A Sensational Summer Solar Solstice to All

Many recent sun-tracking forum posts and our timely visit to Chaco Canyon have heightened my awareness of our place in the cosmos. Today is June 21, the summer solstice and longest day of the year, so we Northern hemispherians had more and longer direct sunlight today than any other day. Various solstice celebrations took place at Chaco, Stonehenge, and all over. Just north of Los Angeles in Santa Barbara, hundreds of beatnik drummers took to the hills and beat their drums starting before sunrise.

So kick up your heels a bit and go celebrate the li'l druid Anasazi primate in you...

We pagans over here in Europe don't need reminding. Mid summer is an especially serious party in Scandinavia. Just now in Helsinki it does not get dark at night so you can't really forget it.

Here in Phoenix, Arizona we're very happy that direct sunlight is on the down slope, 109 F (42.7C) today.

Here in the Gray Pacific Northwet, Spring is just getting underway after a very wet and gloomy first six months. So now you're saying this is it? The days will start getting shorter? It's almost too depressing to contemplate.

Doesn't Seattle have a theme song for its summers?

@PhiPi: Wet & gloomy, eh? No wonder you're not a regular contributor in all the "solar power" threads...

I think it was Mark Twain who said, "The best winter I ever spent was a summer in Seattle."

Like Heater said, here in Scandinavia mid-summer is a holiday; Just like easter or christmas.
This Friday 96% of all Scandinavians gets drunk and eats a lot of strawberries, hearing and potatoes!

    No time for celebrating here.
We are having the annual emergency defense drill "Turning Point 5"
The days really do feel pretty long this week :-)

I tried my best to miss all this and get to go to the
Paris air show...but I didn't have the right kind of pull
    or the right friends.

And a great summer solstice from sunny Edmonton, where today the Sunrise was at 5:04 and Sunset will be at 22:07 for a total of 17 hours and 3 minutes of sunshine. Not as good as northern Scandinavia's 24 hours but I am going to enjoy every minute of it.
