Quickstart Header placed by PnP automatically

Hi everybody-
Quickstart Boards have a large multi-pin female surface-mount header on them, and they're very difficult to auto-feed into our PnP machine (from the tubes in which they come) ...

Matt H. (not me) designed a specialized loading tray (it's way in the background of the video), but as you can see the vacuum head picks up the header, scans it, rotates it, and places it onto the prepasted Quickstart Array.

It gets spun so fast that it appears to spin off like a propeller (pun:-) - but it ends up getting placed perfectly - Matt H figured out this tray/loading combo - this is its first run, and it's working well!

Check it out...

-Matt

Matt, Excellent! I recently worked with my laser cutter to have a matrix tray made for a wide, odd-shaped Molex connector for our PnP maching because a feeder that would fit the part would have cost $3,140. I designed a matrix tray that allows us to slide in strips of the carrier tap and the parts are picked just like BGAs from a tray. Ours is made of white Delrin so the total cost of the tray is under $100, so we saved $3,040. I added that to my list of justifications for us to purchase our own laser. A laser is just too useful when it comes to making jigs, etc.

Hey WBA - Exactly! The quote we got for a feeder to do the same thing was $4,200.00! Cha-Ching.

For $5 worth of material and about 2 hours of design/fab time, we figure we saved about $4,100.00!
