It looks like they aren't stocked in the US and those parts are being shipped over from the UK. Doesn't make any sense at all but I guess that is why they cost more.....

Farnell, same company but in the UK, sells them here for £10.99 ($17.44). They are $34.88 from Element14 in Asia, also part of Farnell!

Very strange. They're $7.99 at Digikey.

Don't forget Newark's $20 handling fee, boosting the one-piece price to $51.01! The big industrial distributors lost their edge years ago to the likes of DigiKey and Mouser. I don't even bother to check them for stock anymore.

Yes, I don't order from FARNEL " Element 14" any more ( Only some prototype parts if I have too, but not much!)

They are too stubborn and arrogant in my personal opinion, I have mentioned how much I purchase yearly in electronics and they just don't care, So I gave all my "LOCAL" business to RS-Components ( same Allied in the USA) and they look after my needs. I think MOUSER is the best ( best website ) , Then DIGIKEY best range, But a silent new company that has very impressive pricing is FUTUREELECTRONICS! ( not to be confused with futurlec , they sell counterfeits!)

I am negotiating deals with them now and the pricing is the best. They sell small quantities and keep stock, They are better at pricing than Arrow, Avnet etc from what i have seen so far. They believe that keeping stock is considered an ASSET rather than most companies that believe stock is a liability!

When it come to Prop chips though, I get mine still From RT Nollet in Melbourne.

Future is good, I have to admit, although I've not bought from them in awhile. They're definitely worth another look! Thanks for the reminder!

Also, don't forget Jameco. For the items they carry -- especially connectors, power supplies, and legacy ICs -- they're hard to beat.

As Far as Ordering from Australia is concerned, Both Mouser and Digikey have a flat rate of $30 with fedex, I can order on a FRIDAY here, and have my goods shipped over the weekend so they are here on Monday Morning! Very Impressive, I am not sure what Jamico fright is to Sydney!

As far as NEWARK is concerned, They are generally ALWAYS Cheaper than FARNELL, and usually similar in pricing to Mouser, Digikey.

I use the fact that NEWARK is way cheaper than FARNELL ( and being the same company), I point out the difference to FARNELL and they are Still to stubborn to drop their prices !

With Element14 (Farnell), the shipping is all free if ordered online, regardless of whether the warehouse is local, Singapore or Newark in the USA, and I have not yet found a minimum.

So just think of those prices as including the courier fee and it suddenly looks a whole lot better :)

    HI Tubular,

re FARNELL, That "free" shipping has changed over the last year or so, It always use to be free, then it was free for orders over 100 dollars, then it was only free for web orders, then it was a flat rate of 10 bucks for same day service ( does not include quoted items!) , then after 25 years, they DONT HAVE SAME DAY SERVICE ANYMORE, unless you pay high courier charges 40 buck or more for metro!. I know for a fact that their delivery charges are on average about 5 bucks per delivery!, When this NO SAME DAY SERVICE Stopped, They had not informed at all, In fact there sales people didn't even know what the deal was. So That was my last straw!

What the point of free shipping when most prices are inflated 5 to 10 time cost price!!

As you can see I am pissed off about Farnell, Trust me I have had very harsh words with them, Including SHAMING one of their employees who sent me nasty emails complaining about I was asking for too many quotes! I spoke to the highest management, and they did nothing!

Very simple I take my business elsewhere, Its a shame , as they are in the same METRO AREA as Me.

Future Electronics has actually been around for quite some time as a wholesale distributor (my employer has sourced through them for 10+ years) They finally figured out the point you are making: there's money to be had in us hobbyists if they just treat us with a bit of respect. Other distributors don't realize that ten $50 orders are the same as one $500 order if you have your order processing down right. Since orders from us are typically online only, they don't have the additional expense of an assigned account manager to handle the account. They changed some of their policies about minimum orders, etc to suit our needs. In a way, we have the tough economy to thank for that!

Newark is undergoing a lot of changes right now and I can tell you that from a wholesale standpoint, their performance has been going downhill steadily. The whole Newark/Farnell/Element14 combo thing has turned me off from dealing with them because they mad a mess of who they are and where their focus is..

I mostly use Farnell and RS (I'm in the UK), and get excellent service from both, with free next day delivery. I sometimes use Digi-Key and get free delivery in three days on orders over £50.

Being in the UK as well, I use those as well but use Rapid Electronics a lot as well.

re: Newark and Farnell you can often find the same part quoted on Farnell's website from both both Farnell and Newark and the Newark listing is nearly always cheaper, but if you order the Newark park Farnell sting you with a ~ £15 handling fee :(

The cheapest components are sold by Tayda Electronics. Tayda isn't that big of a company, but I have bought from them several times and they are very good.

Most of my orders go to Digikey and Mouser with some also going to Jameco (I'm in the US). All of this is purely hobbyist-level. I have ordered from Newark in the past but only when they were absolutely the only place to find something.

I like the fact that Digikey and Mouser cater to businesses and hobbyists and allow fairly small orders (I've never minded things like $25 minimum orders and I've placed significantly larger orders too). When you order from them you know what manufacturer the parts come from which makes repeat orders very easy - you don't just get a random part (although this isn't always important).

I also like the fact that shipments from Digikey only take one or two days by USPS because they are fairly close to me.

DavidM: Have you used the Australian DigiKey? I am curious because the prices seemed higher when I last looked. It was just too complicated to work out what was going on and if I would cop another GST too.

They are only $6.79 at Digi-Key if you buy 25 of them.

    HI Cluso,

Order from the US sites only, for both Mouser and Digikey, Select US Dollars, Pay via Credit or debit card, or get a 30 day account if you order regularly, and keep your order under $1000AUD, ( include the fright cost and exchange rate). That way you wont pay any GST or Import duty tariffs, I got stung once, for an urgent order and it was held up in customs, IF you order is over 1K, you can alway split it up.

Dont forget if you are not happy with any list price, just get them to QUOTE and set yourself a target price!

Also Please have a look at FUTUREELECTRONICS, especially for NAT SEMI, they seem to have the best pricing, and Get them to quote, you will get much better prices, and they have local offices with real people to talk to.

heres an example of a price I just got from them

45 pcs of LM2587S-ADJ in tubes for $3.9212 each! that about half price of everywhere else!

I just want to point out , most of my purchasing is for small production runs.

Here's some interesting 2010 gross revenue data for the top 11 electronics distributors, from EE Times, issue 1602, 16 May 2011:
    1. Avnet: $22.9 billion
    2. Arrow: $18.7 billion
    3. WPG Holdings (Asia): $12.1 billion
    4. Future Electronics: $4.5 billion
    5. Electro-components (Allied): $1.7 billion
    6. Premier Farnell: $1.53 billion
    7. DigiKey: $1.52 billion (Look out, Farnell!)
    8. TTI Inc. (who?): $1.4 billion
    9. Nu Horizons ('Good pricing when they have what you want): $0.71 billion
    10. DAC Group (who?): $0.53 billion
    11. Mouser Electronics: $0.50 billion ('Got some catching up to do with DigiKey!)

BTW, Newark didn't even make the top 25, which ended at $0.055 billion. (Maybe their pricing structure isn't working very well.)

    Interesting revenue info! Thanks Phil

I noticed future is no 4, I believe they are privately owned, so no greedy shareholders!

I am surprised where mouser is, although I think mouser is owned by TTI

    Also,

Mouser #11 is a subsidiary of TTI #8.

In defense of Newark, I've had good luck bargaining with their sales reps when a quantity of parts was on the line, especially things that were held in stock by Farnell U.K. I use hundreds of Deltron connectors, and Newark always comes through with a better price and availablity than Mouser and the $20 flat rate more or less express shipping from Farnell stock looked pretty good. Newark/Farnell is the only reliable distributor of some lines, for example, the Prowave ultrasonic transducers.

I'd never heard of TTI, although I've dealt with Mouser. For small orders I prefer them to Dig-key, because they charge a lot less for shipping to the UK.

Probably not too relevant to most of us, but I'll ask Jim Carey to contact Newark and sort out the silliness in regards to pricing.
