Downloaded Spin Files are Text Only

Downloaded Spin files end up looking like this:

name.spin.text

On Mac osx, I have tried associating the file with the bst app but it won't recognize bst. It recognizes all the other programs. What's wrong with bst?

I'm not a "MACguy", but can't you simply rename the files, removing the .text extension?

Do a Get Info on one of these Spin files (%I). In the Name & Extension box, delete the ".txt" so the file name ends with ".spin". In the Open with: box, choose BST from the list presented. If BST isn't there, scroll down until you get to "other ...", then choose BST using the file open dialog that you'll get. If you want, you can also click on the "Change all" button so that existing .spin files should also open with BST. Then close the Get Info window with %W. Note that "%" is the command key.

Thank you Mike. I appreciate this information very much as the procedure works perfect for associating all .spin files with BST on the Mac.

One remaining question. When I download any .spin file from the Forum, why does it appear with the txt extension added to it? (name.spin.text) As OBC said, delete txt and add spin manually. But just wondering why it adds txt to the spin download.

What browser/version are you using? I've never run into that issue, but I'm probably one of about a dozen people still using OmniWeb, so my experience isn't applicable to the general public. But I've never heard any of the other OS X users on the forum mention this problem.

So it's caused by the browser... I'm using Apple MacBook Safari 4.1.3, OSX 10.4.11 and when I tried Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2 it put the contents of the file to download on a web page screen in text.

So I had to try again, right click on the file and choose download. Then it came up with a different generic name "attachment" without the original file name, with a php extension, so I had to change both the name and the extension manually.

This is all very strange and maybe this computer is too old with incompatible internet software.

When a webserver serves up a file, it tells the receiving web browser the default name to use (xxxx.spin) and the type of the file (MIME type). Like all source files, this would be a "text" file with some kind of sub-type. The web browser has to figure out what to do with the file, particularly since the file extension usually is associated with the application program to be used to open the file. In the MacOS, the default application for text files is TextEdit and the standard extension for TextEdit files is ".txt". Unless Safari or whatever web browser has been instructed to use a different extension (and default application) for "text" files, it will add ".txt" to the file name unless that's already there and it will assign a default application of TextEdit.

    Humanoido:
On Mac OS X (as well as earlier) there are two fields in the HFS+ Btree one for the file type and on for the creator type, change the creator type (a 4 character field) to the creator type of BST (do not know what this is), and then change the file type to BSTs file type for spin files (again do not know what this is). You may also have to index the folder containing BST.

Also in your web browsers applications setting, associate .spin files with BST.

Oh, man, don't use the OS X version of Internet Explorer. You're just asking for trouble. If you want to try something other than Safari, I'd suggest OmniWeb. It's free and it works with 10.4.11.

Oh man, SSteve, this OmniWeb is fantastic. It immediately solved the download problem on the first download test! It's designed to run on this MacBook's older OSX 10.4. It makes pages look 100% better, fast loading, even better than Apple's Safari browser! Everything is more Mac-like and very intuitive and I love the way tabs are handled to give more viewing area. I've already switched over. Thanks for this valuable tip.

I'm really happy to hear that OmniWeb worked for you. I've been using it for years ever since it was a paid application. I still haven't found a compelling reason to switch to a newer browser since this was so far ahead of its time. One nice thing is even though they aren't actively developing OmniWeb they have kept it using recent versions of WebKit so it's still pretty compliant with new web technologies.

Be sure to check out the shortcuts feature. It lets you do things like type "wiki nevada theatre" to do a wikipedia search. I think other browsers have a feature like this now, but OmniWeb had it before anyone.
