Nice. So what's wrong with erector set? They should have used servos instead. Too many gears for sure. LOL I have been working on an erector set gripper that can lift more then empty cans or plastic cups. Trial runs can hold a FULL bottle of wine (about 2.5 lbs). Erector set is the way to go. Higher torque servos would not eat up so much I/O and still provide the torque needed. Easier to control.
Without positional feedback it's more of a novelty than anything else. Yes, they should have used servos, but that would make it cost more for the weight it appears to be able to lift.
It's definitely a "strange ranger" of a product. That particular China Ebay seller has an eclectic selection (say that 10X fast) of items. Lots of bikinis (yes, for real), and this amazingly practical USB-powered fridge:
