Very strange photo behavior

1) the windows XP computer and drive crashed
2) the drive was restored and copied to a usb drive
3) the usb drive is attached to a good windows xp pc
4) the photos are viewed using windows viewer and found with PICASA
A) the thumbnails all look good
the opened photo will look good for 3 to 5 seconds
C) the photo suddenly turns into half or less of a photo or one narrow band of cut image
D) a few photos are ok and remain stable
What is going on?
