Object detection using camera buffer

Hello,
I'm part of a project where we're trying to use a camera module to detect and hopefully avoid objects. The detection distance needs to be fairly respectable for our application and I was hoping to get 25-50 feet. From what I understand the PING))) sensor cannot read out this far, and neither can the maxbotixs sensors so we're going to take a camera module and hopefully use it to detect objects. Has anyone ever attempted and/or accomplished this and if so could you let me know what camera module you used and the code? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
