Anyone know if they make (and/or where to find) a 44 pin socket to fit a QFN propeller? Im attracted to the small footprint of the chip, but still intimidated by surface mount...
Hi HalcyonDaze. If I know correctly - That socket's are possible to BUY but I dont think You will buy them --- (1000$) used for some IC that need programing befor mounting on PCB.

There are 44 pin qpfp sockets available but they are just for testing and are very expensive. The manufacturers use them for
burn in and temperature testing.
The propeller has no internal flash/eeprom that could justify a socketed qfn/tqfp package. If you only want a handful of propellers and plenty boards you have to go DIP40. Below the package there is enough space to hide many components if space is at a premium
A QFN socket would defeat the purpose of the QFN's footprint and will cost abnormally high. Here is a thread with the same question with a link to a supplier of these sockets.
There are a few options out there for a small footprint if you are looking for a ready to go design. The Propmodule 1x1 is a PropQFN based PCB that is very small. Unfortunately, Mctrivia is no longer making them. Oldbitcollector has a good guide (called the Propeller Cookbook) for hacking down a proto board for a mini board using the PropQFP. I make a module called the M44D40+ that uses the PropQFN and includes the full basic prop circuit in a DIP40 size package. I just need to buy Props to start making them as I have enough fabs and other parts for 500 modules.
Huh, I was thinking more along the lines of the cheap $2 sockets you can find for PLCC type chips. Oh well. My reasoning was just to use a socket to prevent chip damage during mounting. Thanks anyway everyone
