Lest you miss the usefulness of gallows humor for coping with painful things, allow me to acquaint you with something I wrote elsewhere about the Columbia: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/2/1/154329/9031
Let's face it: the very choice of Houston as a NASA control center was, itself, a political decision, due in no small part to then-Senator Lyndon Johnson's influence and lobbying efforts. Houston should quit whining and count its blessings. It has already benefited greatly from the space program. I'm sure NASA's overriding criterion for the shuttle placements focused on which venues would best serve the visiting public by maximizing exposure, not on those venues which were instrumental in the program itself.
