    I've got to build me one of those. But with LEDs on the ends of the silver blobs.

    I am most impressed by their ability to keep the blobs from spontaneously starting to swing like pendulums and start clacking into one another. I wonder if the blobs have some kind of active dampening system inside.

    Here is a similar though more mechanical so less complex/dynamic version.

    Given the BMW uses metal balls maybe their weight provides the necessary dampening. And they are in an enclosed space that may help prevent pendulum behaviour caused by unexpected air movement. Of course the earths rotation can get a motionless pendulum swinging.

    Regardless of the mechanics it is a thing of beauty.

    That is very cool. I can't imagine it being programmed with anything less than a gui. I see it was uploaded in 2008 so I would bet it has since been combined with an equally amazing light show.
