TI to acquire National Semiconductor

This came as a bit of a shock today:

Given the size and market share of those two companies, it seems a bit anti-competitive. I wonder if or how this will impact Microchip's growing analog business.

Nonetheless, the news doesn't give me the same sinking feeling I had when Maxim bought Dallas Semiconductor. :(

...yeow! This could directly affect my work's business model. We make ATE and sell to both.

    Thanks for posting this.

Yeah I got this email also. You know I wonder if something is going to happen to STMicroelectronics? I call the offices and no one ever is there to take a call. I am in desperate need of this IC - VNH3SP30TR-E.

Did you look at this site

    http://www.aeri.com/product.asp

    VNH 3SP30TR-E They show 30000

    VNH 3SP30TR-E-LF They show 4000

One Note I have never order from them before

Surprised me to see the same email today. I thought maybe it came a few days late (last Friday was April fools, not today....) Will be very interesting to see how it pans out. One note that caught my eye is that no changes will be made to part numbers and nothing is planned to be obsoleted from the acquisition. I find that odd, since many products competed with each other form those two companies.

    Sam,

As some friendly advice / warning; that company is a type of Black Market for ICs. In the past I have received counterfeit parts and swore to avoid this type of distributor. I guess in an extreme situation one would be forced to call them – I would rather remake the circuit board. Counterfeit parts get expensive!

I have a handful of those LM35 by National Semicon. Since TI bought over it, could they change the names and models of LM35? Or leave them as it be? :D

I think I remember that TI has their own chip fab. I wonder
if National Semiconductor also has fabs? If so the new bigger TI
would have a lot of fab capability.

    HollyMinkowski,

Currently National Semiconductor's largest fabs are in Greenock, UK and Portland Maine ... If in Maine, you can see the fab from the airport tarmac if you are ever in that neck of the woods. Interesting though, Fairchild Semi still has a presence at National's Fab in Maine... wonder if that will change now.

TI has their own fab as well, the one I'm familiar with is in Richardson, Texas ... I'm sure that there are others such as in Miho, Japan which was severely damaged in the earthquake.

TI's main campus is in Richardson. I've also been to TI in Tuscon, although a lot of that mixed-signal stuff was shifted to Sherman, TX (about an hour's drive North of Dallas). They also have a fab in Stafford, TX (a Houston suburb).
