NES controller adapter help

I've hooked up an NES controller adapter to a basic stamp 2 correctly and I've been able to get the sample code found in the datasheet to work properly. Now, I've simply been trying to get the servos to run whenever a directional button is pressed, but I've had absolutely no luck in doing this. None of my conditional statements have been able to alter states depending on what button is pressed. Any help would be appreciated.

    Have you tried looking for just one direction button and then
    GOTO'ing a routine?
    [ 'Up" -- > Forward ]

    The drill is -- "Attach your code" [Press the 'Go Advanced' button
    and then look for / procede with "Manage Attachments"]
