USB Camera

All--

I bought a USB camera like the one the dentist sticks in your mouth. You can find them all over Amazon . . . and other places, I imagine. (Here's the one I bought on Amazon.) Of course, it is only LIKE the much more expensive camera your dentist shoves in your mouth. (I don't know the differences, other than the dental software is high dollar stuff.)

The software doesn't work well under Win 7. All I can get it to do is video. However, under XP it appears to function well. (The Amazon blurb doesn't mention Win 7.) I will use it on my XP laptop.

Here are my first two images . . .

Here is an link to an exciting 139mb avi AP-16+ video.

I will use it in several different hobbies, but it is laying on my robotics desk and I can already tell it is going to be great in its preview mode to see those itty-bitty things on a PCB!

Bill, hope you dont mind me asking my own camera (video) in your thread ? I bought a great 2007 dual core Dell for $290. The fire wire port on it is the 'little one' but that is what is on my vid camera. So the 'big end' of the cable for fire wire wont fit ? weird cause on the desktop i threw in the industrial bin :) had a port for the 'big end' . Do i just need an adapter ?

    Mike.

    Mike.

If the cam is a like a webcam and needs power to run It will need a 12V power injector .
as 4 Pin jacks are data only . If the cam is a normal DV cam you can buy 4 to 4 pin cables .
I would not recomend a adapter ads the 4 pin jack is SO small you really do risk breaking off the jack in side the computer or cam .

less stress is the best .

    Bill,
did you test under 7 the camera using an image software, like irfanview? It should work also as a capture tool.

Decent pictures from that unit. I had thought about picking one up off eBay for myself a while back. We have an Aven Micro 26700-202 at work ($180) that is pretty nice for the price. It has a small software package that is needed to get really good pics. Maybe I'll grab some pics tomorrow to throw up in case anyone is comparison shopping.

No. I didn't. The only video capture software I have (that I know of) is the software that came on the CD with the camera: AMCAM. It is bare-bones stuff. No documentation. The installation CD came with incorrect documentation. However, it installed easily and correctly every time. (The first time you run it installation happens. The second time you run it, an un-install happens.)

Usually cameras are seen from windows all alike.
Also with mine the software supplied was terrible, and guess what, it is called AMcap...
Anyway I can use it under irfanview selecting file->acquire and then selecting the right source (if you have more than one). Then you can capture the images.

    It works also under skype...
