Multiple lights with DAC

I have a project to control 8 light bulbs (12V at ~ 0.3A each) with a Stamp. I have done the Op-amp + Tip120 Darlington transistor to do the amplification using PWM or pulsout, but it becomes very inefficient when doing 8 units and very difficult to get smooth control over light intensity.
I looked at the MAX5121 and MAX5120 12-bit DAC and they look promising . Has anyone played with this before? Is there a standard DAC chip to use for such purpose? I am looking for a chip that you can send SIP signal and it outputs and holds analog voltage continuously until you change the value again.
thanks,
Al
