Like a well buttered piece of toast that ALWAYS falls face down when you drop it, my 5" touch screen did just that and it shattered in one corner.

The screen is labeled with the following info:

"253G-18202RS" and "HB050-DM402-12A"

second line: "10070302213"

The "0" could be either zero or Ohhh.. Hard to tell but I think they are zero's.

The screen is 2.9" X 4.7", and 5.5" on the diag.

Any you guys that deal with this stuff all the time got a clue from the numbers who makes this unit??

Any help out there today?? Mike B.

Nope, unfortunately the info I provided is all there was on the label. I was hopeing someone might recognize the part number format and could relate it to a mfr.. The display itself works fine, just doesn't respond to touch...

I'm no pro... but if it's only the touch-part of the touchscreen, then it should be replaceable without the whole LCD being replaced. First of all, see if you can tell how many wires are coming off of the glass panel, (not the LCD). If there are 4, or if you can't tell, it's most likely a resistive touchscreen. If this is the case you can pry the glass panel off the top of the LCD, and replace it with one of the same size. Here is one I found that matches the diagonal dimensions.

Of course, if you could tell us what this came off of, or where you got it to begin with, it would help track down the original part.

[Isn't the likelihood of the buttered side's landing on the carpet inversely proportional to the cost of the carpet?]

PE - Inversely? I must be wasted. It's directly. The inverse thing goes with spandex, but nevermind.

Ok, thanks Microcontrolled. Progress. Before I forget it the display/touch screen comes out of a Rand Mcnally TND-500 automotive GPS. The unit is powered by a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 board.

Before you bother telling me to contact the Mfr (Rand Mcnally) I have been beating my head against the wall with them to NO avail. They don't have a repair facility. If it isnt warranty replacement I'm out of luck. So, shelve the seller of the unit...

Anyway, you gave me enough confidence to pull the unit apart and remove the display/touch screen. They are indeed two seperate units. The display itself has a ribbon cable/PCB type connection to the mother board. On top of the display is the touch screen that has FOUR wires/PCB coming straight off the bottom edge (the long dimension) and SLIGHTLY off center to the right of the touch screen. The ribbon cable from the touch screen looks to be maybe 1" long and is surface mounted to four pads on the display cable. I can handle that soldering/unsoldering no problem.

With the display/touch screen out I can get a little more accurate measurements on the touch screen itself. The diag now appears to be 5.4" extreme edge to edge. The X/Y measurements are 2.8" X 4.6".

Now the big issue is that it appears to be bonded to the display. The touch screen is ruined so not worried about removing it but I am worried about damaging the display itself. Any idea how to seperate the two items??

I sure appreciate the help on this. I have only had the unit 4 months and have come to depend on it!! lol.

If it is bonded to the display......> You might be Lucky to get them apart......> Be care full think twice about pulling them apart it dose not take much to to break the LCD display

Yep, that's the part that worries me. I wonder what kind of adhesive they use??

@microcontrolled: I noticed that on the cable FROM the touch screen there is a part number: "JC05005BA". Now that might be the part number for the ribbon/PCB connector itself. The first part number in my first post was on the back of the display so that is most likey for the display and has nothing to do with the touch screen itself..

    SUCCESS!!
After a six pack to calm me down and a 14 hour operation, I was able to seperate the touch screen from the display and I hooked the display back up and it still wprks perfectly!!!

I also just noticed a part number on the touch screen. 051005. Now to find a suitable replacement

I have not yet removed the ribbon cable connection to the touch screen as it make a handy protector for the display..

This item on Ebay looks like the unit I have. Asked the guy for the exact sizes. The price was right. Are these things pretty "generic"?? is a 5" four wire resistive touch panel pretty much the same as any other 5" panel??

    item: 320643005448

Yes, although the size of the connector differs by brand, a resistive touchscreen is pretty generic. As long as you have the 4 pin connector hooked up right you should get what you want. However if you hook the wires up the wrong way you'll get some weird results! Just make sure that even though it's 5" the length and height are the same.

Ok, I got an email back from the seller and the dim's are really, really close to what I have. Also the way it mounts in the case has a little "wiggle room so for $16.00 I'll give it a try to rescue a $400.oo unit!! lol.

This experience has given me an idea for my Propeller project. In thirty words or less what's involved in "talking" to a touch panel with a prop?? I have a 7" LCD monitor I am using and adding a touch panel would open up a whole new world for my user interface..

@w4fej: "What is required for talking to the Prop?" Well, you read it like you would a potentiometer. You can use an external IC like Rayman's 4.3" display which the Propeller can communicate with via I2C (There is an object for this in the OBEX), or you might be able to set up an RC decay circuit with a few .01uf capacitors, but I haven't tested this and the results could be rough at best. The touchscreen decoder is a Texas Instruments TSC2003, and it will give you acurate readings. It is compatible with any 4 wire resistive touchscreen. http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=296-24158-1-ND
