See zappman's helpful post at http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?129738-Get-your-Penguin-working-without-modifing-the-circuit-card.
I got one, it has a nice big lithium battery and a USB smart charger, great for Penguin and other projects. Worth calling your local Shack for. They are on closeout and getting rare, not available online.
Edit: sorry, link corrected

Smart charger circuitry to charge safely off of a USB input connection
Boost circuitry to generate 5V to the USB output connection
All that plus a white LED flashlight!
Obviously you can make your own direct battery connections to the 3.7V battery if you like.
