Smart wireless charging system for Boe-Bot

Hi All,

The basic idea would be to realize a “Smart wireless charging system” for Boe-Bot which will be composed by the following two main parts:

- A transmitter module that works as wireless Tx-base power supply where Boe-Bot will go every time that it need to recharge batteries. This operation would be automatic everytime a voltage level detector will read a condition of “low battery level”.

- The wireless receiver module on Boe-Bot will acts as battery charger.

Do you think this idea useful and the realization possible ?

Best regards

    "Useful": sure
    "Possible": that depends on the details

    1) The Stamp on the BoeBot can certainly monitor its battery voltage. If you look through this website, you'll find some suggestions and examples of this. Use the "app-notes" link.

    2) Forget about using any kind of RF transmitter / receiver. The power levels are not high enough for any reasonable rate for charging. You need either some direct physical contact and a metal to metal connection or, as an alternative, use two sizable coils, one on the base unit and one on the BoeBot with the two coils serving as the windings on a transformer.

    3) How will the BoeBot "know" where to find the charger and how will it get there? This is doable, but complex.

    People have done this sort of system before. Look at the Roomba for one example (a robotic vacuum cleaner).

    I did a contact-based charger for the Scribbler robot, which is fairly similar to the BoeBot: http://www.botmag.com/articles/scribbler.shtml
