Text to Speech

I am new to the Parallax family. I had great hopes for a design only to learn that a major piece will be missing from the puzzle.

Parallax does not have any text to speech modules. In the past they were available but it seems that they have disappeared from the market.

This is a major let down. I now have to emulate this in software, which will require a PC as the controller. I can use a micro-controller and design my own speech board but that will mean that I have to drop Parallax.

Granted, text to speech modules can be costly but what is an extra $100 when added to a $600 - $700 robot? Text to Speech can be fun to work with also.

Parallax had an add-on board and a module in the past. Please bring a text to speech solution to the table for review with price point.

I believe the reason it was discontinued is that Winbond discontinued the actual Text to Speech chip used on the module.

The only module that I know of that has been around for a long time that is still available is the V8600A module from RC Systems: http://www.rcsys.com/modules.htm It's a great module and I've used them in several projects. The price is reasonable and you can easily interface it to the Parallax Microcontrollers. I haven't tried the VStamp module but that may also be a great fit with the Propeller or BASIC Stamp as the controller.
