I have a new soldering station and need info.

I am working on a board with the BS2 and Bs2p40 and need to do some soldering. The new station has a connector called Equipotential.
Question : Will I hook this connector to the ground on the board that I am soldering for ESD protection while I,m soldering?

I've never seen a soldering station with a connector like that, modern ones are usually ESD safe anyway. What model is it?

    Sounds like a Chinese clone.

Yes, they are saying it's ESD safe, but it has to be a reason for the connector.
It's a JBC advanced series system. Model DI 2860.
I bought it from Howard electronics in the USA and I emailed them with this question and they did not reply.
I also emailed the company that build the unit and they did not reply either.
In the manual it says the Equipotential connector and the tool tip are connected to station mains ground supply for ESD protection.
So I'm guessing hook it to the board that I'm soldering on at the ground connection. May be I could even connect it to my anti-static table matts ground.

I last used a JBC iron about 6 years ago, so my info could be out of date. But one feature of the JBC iron I liked was the iron would automatically ramp down to low temp when the iron was placed in the holder. Once you removed the soldering iron from the holder, it would automatically ramp up to full temperature in 1 second. The end result was greatly extended tip life.

    allie,

I think you have the right idea about the connector on your station. I'd bet it is a place to share a common ground with yourself and the equipment you are working on.

My soldering iron has a small socket for a ground connection.

    Duane,
I share the same thoughts so until I hear something different I,ll use it in this way.
    Thank you for your reply.

Now a question about the 5 different star rateings under our user names, I have never used them before and I am not sure how to rate them?

The stars correspond to the number of posts a member has made.

I think you get one star with 100 posts. Two stars with 200. I don't think they continue in 100 increments though. I haven't quite figured it out.

I personally don't think the number of posts is a good indicator of how beneficial a member is. There have been at least one member who causes trouble instead of help with their posts.

I think a better rating system would be to allow others to rate a post for its helpfulness to add a quality component to the quantity criteria currently used.

I'm not a fan of the current star rating system.

The stars under the user name next to forum posts indicate how many posts the user has made in total in the forums:
no stars: 0 to 99 posts
    1 star: 100 to 249 posts
    2 stars: 250 to 499 posts
    3 stars: 500 to 999 posts
    4 stars: 1000 to 4999 posts
    5 stars: 5000 to 9999 posts
    VIP: 10000+ posts

NB. Phil Pilgrim is only 645 posts away from VIP...

Hmm. I'd never noticed how many stars I have, but it's a pretty good number.

Of the 1351 posts I've made so far, I'll bet 1100 were questions. Still, a well-asked question is a very valuable contribution to the forum.

@sylvie369, I agree that a well-asked question is a very valuable contribution. I don't think the current system needs to change; I just think the stars don't always reflect the value of the members.

Now off to make a couple thousand posts in the test forum.

Same here. Darn, now I will have to try to be a bit more ...diplomatic.
