Video Review of the S2 - Not Thoughtfully Done

Hey S2 Owners,

Have you seen the RUG community review of the S2? It is a multi-part video on youtube.

I watched parts 1 - 3 (which is all there are right now) It was frustrating to see them fumble around with even the basic demos.

The link is here http://www.youtube.com/user/rugcommunity

Video 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0AdYo1IXPE

Video 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JelcOJkPX9w

Video 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnF3_fEsyLI

It is poorly done and shows a basic lack of understanding of the S2.

Solarbotics has a short review which is much, much better.

    Phil,

    If you click on (see all) then scroll down a bit you'll see them. :cool:

    Scroll down to most recent videos - there are 3 (currently) on the S2.

    I have added the link for each video at the top of the thread.

    I hate to think of the work put into documenting the S2 and then see a video like this where the S2 is poorly demonstrated.

    I just love watching a video of someone opening a box. I stopped watching before he started to read the manual. I bet it was riveting.

    The Solarbotics video was good. Using the light sensors to select which demo to run is pretty darn cool.

    I think I'll sell my Boe-Bot and other Basic Stamp stuff (none of which I ever use) and buy a S2.

    @Whit, I didn't think your review of the video was dumb.:innocent:

    LOL! I edited out the "dumb" remark in the title and in my post, becuase I decided it didn't sound very nice. I should have stuck with my standard - "S2 video review burns my biscuits!"

    In the second video, there is a very loud thump whenever the S2 changes direction. Is this from the third wheel hitting the hard table? Do any of you who already have an S2 hear the same thump?

    Thanks
    Al

    Edited for a typo. Sorry.

    @Al,

    Like any differential drive robot with a tail wheel, if you change directions quickly - there can be some chatter of the tail wheel bouncing. The way to prevent this is by ramping the speed up and down (slowing up and down rather than making abrupt changes in speed or direction). With out the robot on a table with the mic right there, this is barely noticable, but the hopping can make precise movement control (detailed scribbling or odometry) more difficult.

    @Whit

    Thanks for the reply. I didn't think about the mic placement. I'm sure the combination of mic placement and the hard table made the wheel bounce MUCH louder than in normal use.

    I agree with your review of the "Rugcommunity S2 Video review parts 1-3".

    However, I am glad to see that the S2 is getting some publicity.

    The reviewer could have / should have taken some more time to learn how use the S2 before making the videos, but I guess his fumbling around does show what a new user might experience trying to select the built in programs using the light sensors.

    I have found it much easier to use just one finger pushing the Reset Button multiple times to select the built in demos.

    There is so much potential built into the S2, it will be interesting to see what people have it doing a year from now.
