I too find it better to ask for forgiveness rather then ask for permission.
'
This is a two sided issue.
'
My wife will get me on some purchases she makes from time to time." She knows how to ask for forgiveness as well"
'
All and all anything under $150 will fly under the radar.(Wife's cool with it))
'
Pushing $200, I have some explaining to do!
I can spend up to $40 without consultation, about once a month. Anything over that requires consultation. We apply the rule equally, so she has to talk to me before spending on her hobbies: quilting, scrapbooking, crochet, and sewing.
The main problem for us is that her hobbies are small purchases once a month or so, but mine tend to be larger purchases made sporadically.
Three words... "Honey Do List" :-) .. those of you that are married will understand.
'
Dead-on Beau !!!
'
Include Parallax stuff into her honey do list when ever possible.
'
If this doesn't work. Convince her that the Internet connection is going to fail with out the Spinneret and only Parallax has the Spinneret.(You will also need to add in some additional components to make it work) So this is a big bonus. (small white lie)
'
She'll just be happy to keep her INTERNET connection going, And she will lose focus on the parts you bought to go with the Spinneret.
'
Like I said in an earlier reply, Its two sided.
'
My wife got me good a few years ago with the washer and dryer.I was in a long outage,Working really long hours and she told me the washer and dryer where out. I was so tired, I took her word for it.I told her to just go out and replace them,She wanted S/S washer&dyer to match kitchen. She did! (Man was that expensive)
My step daughter has really enjoyed our not so old " used none working " washer & dryer.
'
I don't recommend tiring to out smart wife. She'll end up winning in the end.
'
Don't slack on the honey does ether.
In order to launder money for Parallax purchases, I maintain a global network of devoted mistresses who traffic in illegal drugs, weapons, state secrets and bundled home mortgage securities. I've discovered that it's much, much easier than trying to ask for the wife's permission.
Having confessed all that, I'm still trying to imagine how the results of this poll might be used in a marketing strategy session. How might such data play out in a decision-making process?
"Yeah, guys, but you know the poll results show that 70% of our customers are male, single, lonely, have lots of money, and really like automated doo-hickeys. Put two and two together and what have you got... besides...."

No consulation required. But I never buy for more the $100 at a time. I better split the orders so I buy for one hundred now and then wait for a couple of months until next order. But everytime the mail-woman arrives with a soft box I use to mention I probably need something from Parallax now..
I fall into the "fun fund" category where things I sell on eBay that have funds that end up in PayPal can be used however I please. Lately, we have been using it to help with other things, but it's short term. My wife is really good with my hobby even though some of my "exciting projects" bore her to death. As far as things I "need" for my hobby, she is actually really good at pulling strings with the checkbook to make sure I can get them. For Christmas and my birthday, I rarely go disappointed with my wish lists. It's a two way street, as others have mentioned, and she usually is able to pick up many things she needs for scrapbooking/stamping. I voted 25-100, since if I don't have it in my fun fund, we always discuss it. Neither of us spend anything on hobbies without talking about it.
When I had a job I was allowed so much a week to pay for my cell phone gas for the car to go back and forth to work and what was left I could save or spend how ever I like with no spousal approval
Now when I would work over time then I would have to get spousal approval for some of that money to do what ever I want to do this was not always easy to do how ever
How ever in either case when I order something from Parallax I would let my wife know I had order some thing
I have to say that I'm one of the lucky ones. I can probably spend more that $500 without the wife's approval, as long as I don't do it too often. But I personally place a limit on my self of between $100 and $200. I'm the frugal one in the house.
As a side note, some six or seven years ago, my wife and I were in Santa Fa NM in a small shop that sold only ladies handbags. My wife found a leather backpack/purse that was hand painted by an artist by the name of Jane Yoo. It was beautiful and it was $350. My wife ask be if she could get it. With a big smile on my face, I said Yes. But in the back of my mind, I was thinking $350 for a new RC engine and aircraft. My wife still has the backpack and uses it occasionally. It has taken on a deep patina and she still gets compliments when she uses it. It was well wreath the price. And I never went out and spent $350 on a new RC engine and aircraft, at least, not all at once.
@Erco...haha, that would be hilarious. Imagine taking your computer over to your wife/ girlfriend and be like "23 forum members wife approved this purchase, including the VP of the company"... She just couldn't say no then:)
I gave a response but it's not really about my wife. Nearly everything I've ever bought from Parallax has been expensed and paid for by my boss. Below $300 or so they pretty much let me do whatever I want on the assumption that I know what I need to do what I'm going to do. That's the point at which they get nervous enough that I feel I should explain pretty carefully what I'm about before spending their money.
I'm a widower now, but my wife was a major gadgetaholic - she HAD to have the latest ipod, imac, iphone, ibook... It was like an addiction.
We both worked in good jobs, so we could afford them, but I saw all her gadgets as nothing but expensive toys. She wasn't very amused by my jokes about why doesn't she just give Steve Jobs her credit card number.
I rarely buy any gadget; I'd rather buy the parts and try to make them, so when I did buy some parts, she loved it because it let her off the hook a little.
My wife would never know unless the amount were well above $10,000. Sounds crazy, but I've got three times that amount in my checking account right now. We've been incredibly fortunate.
I'm single anyway but to tell you the truth i'm embarassingly cheap haha. I don't like spending any money at all on my electronics hobby. I wouldn't have gotten into the BS2 at all had it not been given to me by a friend (she was moving away and told me that i'd be able to do cooler stuff with it than she could...even though i didn't know anything aboug programming lol!) As for everything else...? All picked out of the trash. I have a hard time buy electronic components because it feels like buying a stick or a pinecone. Most common parts (reistors, transistors, caps, etc) are so abundtant in the garbage that I cant bring myself to purchase them from a store rofl. So the check on my purchases isn't a spouse, it's my own cheap-bastard self!! LOL!
That said, I gotta hand it to Parallax you know? You guys straight up give out some really really awesome info, software, etc. I downloaded Andy Lindsay's What's A Microcontroller? And I've been following along with it. Really really helpful and easy way to learn how to do things wiht the stamp. Not to mention that StampPlotLite thinggy and all the other useful pdfs (industrial control, etc). So I wanted to say thanks for all that! I appreciate it!
Ha, Ha, Ha
My wife and I each have "fun money' that we can spend on whatever. Last year, when we drove out to the UPE near Chicago, she dropped me off at the expo while she spent the day at a spa with a friend... I know, I don't understand it either...
I think I voted on the over $500 range but that was in error as I didn't see the other option no consultation required. My wife and I have our own money, we share the bills, but beyond that we don't answer to each other. In over 22 years of mariage, we never had a cross word over money. So if you are looking for accurate data on this survey, move my vote around.
BTW - Please don't raise the prices of Prop chips to over $500.00, I can't spare that kind of money ;-)

Who's with me?
(Cue the sound of empty saloon doors swinging and tumbleweeds blowing though town...)
My wife is pre-approved. No limit. It works best that way.
