Is anyone aware of an available prop-based phone dialer which would allow the playing of recordings stored on SD Card?

The AP-16 is a fast way to run audio files off the SD card. This product is one way to do what you want. Its part number is 31316.

    Hello Everyone

I am interested in something similar. I want to hook up a modem/fax or whatever to send out a text message. For example, if there is a machine error, I want to send a text message to a cell phone indicating that an error has occured and what the error was.

For the text-message based thing, you should check out Sparkfun's cell-phone modules: http://www.sparkfun.com/categories/69 You can either get one of the serial-interface modules and hook it up to a Prop or use one of their modules with a microcontroller already on it (which, I suppose, you could *also* hook up to a Prop :)

Thanks for the link, which resulted in a quest for more information. From what I have discovered, to be able to hook up to a cellular network and send sms messages, you need a gsm type modem. I was hoping this could be done with a regular land line.

basiclly a job has fallen into my lap, and Im very excited about it.

its the monitoring of some hvac alarms for various limits based on temp, humidity..etc

the boiler mechanic 2 years ago made this slick box with a touch screen (operator interface) a PLC and some dialer. Well the guy who was supposed to program everything never got it working aside from the guys logo being displayed on the screen.

anyhow, I will use the dialer that is already there, the PLC will be replaced with a C3 :).

im still not sure if Im going to replace the touch screen, its a serial device with its own IO...it gets programmed from a PC...It could probably do the job that the PLC was supposed to do. However, it costs about 1,000 bucks....and it seems like a waste of $$ to purchase one so I could write a driver for it.

Yeah...it looks like its all going to be replaced. I'll let you guys know how it turns out :)

The state of that project that you have inherited sound just the same as that cartoon strip "I have no idea how to design apower supply, so I have hammered a nail into a piece of wood. I am on leave now but ...."

Yeah Toby, that's kind of how it went.

The nice thing for me is that its an auxilary project, one which I will enjoy doing as well. So there is not allot of pressure/deadlines for me...Yay!!

Gee, I built a phone answer/switch/musiconhold for households in late 90's but it wasn't successful. I cannot recall if it could dial (dtmf chip? - it had a DTMF detector chip) but it was approved for Oz/NZ. It provided the isolation and had an input for a radio (or whatever) which did not require approval. Pretty sure I chucked the pcbs.
I could get a new lot of pcbs but not sure about the interest in such an interface. PCB is 50x60mm. Not sure if all parts are still available and although a micro controls it, there is no interface to it. Just checked, DTMF detection only with CM8870 chip.

I have started a new thread here http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?128867-Interfacing-the-Prop-to-the-telephone-network-(dialup) where I put some ideas for this up over the next few days or so.
