Need Help with Alphanumeric Displays
I am using 14 segment alphanumeric displays they are common anode and I use 220 ohm resistors on each of the cathodes and the anodes are connected to npn transistors which are hooked up to 74hc595 shift register and to 5 volts. I plan to use two more 74HC595 shift registers to control the cathodes at a later time but I am not sure if this is possible.

I need a little help with writing the program, and maybe the circuit itself. I made a very crude schematic with MS Paint.
