How to run a dc motor with basic stamp microcontroller?

Hi I want to know that how do you run a 5V dc motor with basic stamp. Do you need any relay to run the dc motor? And if a relay is required then is it just simple programming to turn it on and off. I just want to use the motor as a fan for project. Like High ... to turn the motor on and low... to turn it off..

Thanks in advance.

Yes you would need a relay to do that, your Stamp may not be able to handle the load of the motor, An external DC power source may be needed.

You can get tiny reed relays for that. Make sure you look at what the current draw of the fan is. Reed relays are typically pretty low current capacity. For a relay you'll need a current limiting resistor, and a diode. It's very simple. I'm sure someone on here has a schematic, or you can search these forums for it. It's a common request.

Use a transistor and you have the option of speed control too :)

Tons of motor/relay info in the sticky (always listed first): http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?110200-Member-Supported-FAQ&p=921885#post921885
