Hello. I am currently working on making an animatronic Eastern Screech Owl with a friend for a project in my Engineering class. We are using the BASIC Stamp Discovery Kit (USB) (27807) and we have pneumatics from Gears EDS. We were wondering how we could program the board to send signals to a solenoid valve and to play a sound file (either the bird's calls or information about the owl that we will record) .

Pneumatic valves usually have a solenoid to open and close them and you'll probably need some kind of switching transistor to turn on and off the amount of current needed. Without some kind of datasheet for the valve, it's impossible to say what's needed although look at Nuts and Volts Column #6 for examples (go to the Resources tab on Parallax's main web page and you'll see a link for the Nuts and Volts Column index).

Sound files need some kind of external player. For really short (up to 20 seconds) sounds, you might be able to use a little sound player/recorder from Radioshack for $10, but you'll need a reed relay to trigger it. Several companies make MP3 players or .wav players including EFX-TEK (sold by Parallax) and Vinculum's VMusic2. The Propeller can play .wav sounds recorded on an SD card and, for short sounds, can play them from an EEPROM.
