String manipulation in SPIN

I have some doubts about the use of strings in SPIN.

I wonder how I can manipulate the strings, for example: how to access any position of a particular string and insert or remove valuables of any kind.
Reber need a byte sent by a computer, modify the string in a given position and return to the computer. However, I'm not dominating the use of strings.
