They're not going to disappear any time soon. Parallax bought lots and lots of SX wafers, enough to produce Stamps for 5 to 10 years at least at current demand rates. That's nearly forever in the tech world.

The BS2 doesn't use the SX. It uses a Microchip PIC16F57. Microchip is still making those. There's no guarantee that they'll continue to do this though.

If you'll look at the General Discussion thread, you'll see that Parallax is developing a new Board of Education using the Propeller. Although this won't directly replace the current Board of Education (and its Stamp), you can see that it eventually will take the place of the Stamp-based BOE for educational purposes. There'll be a whole new curriculum based around it

There's no need to worry about a shortage of SX chips as used in the BASIC Stamp series. We have a 10-15 year supply locked up for long-term usage in these products. In fact, since we've designed the SX out of some non-BASIC Stamp products (Ping, Serial LCD, etc.) our supply for BASIC Stamps is actually longer than what I quoted above.

And, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Parallax taking delivery of more wafers in the future.

We're keeping our promise to our customers, as we have for the last 20 years.
