As you pointed out in K5, had Mr. X pursued sales as ardently as he pursued gambling, he could have earned as much or more, and benefitted society in the process.
BTW, the extent of my gambling involved passing through McCarran airport on the way to a supercomputer conference. I mentioned to someone in my party that I'd never so much as played a nickel slot. Presumably to illustrate how easy it was, he pulled a quarter out of his pocket, put it in a nearby bandit, and pulled the arm. The machine kept the quarter and we kept on walking. Yup, it was pretty easy.
