support for dxf attachements

The process for attaching files to posts checks the extensions of the files and only allows certain types. This list of types does not include DXF.

It would be nice if DXF could be added to the list.

Edit (sort of): I don't know where the extra "e" in attachments came from.

Typically, the file types that cannot be uploaded to the site are placed in an archive file (ZIP, ZIP7, RAR, etc.) and uploaded. We'll be glad to add it if there is a demand for this type of file upload.

    I know. I did it yesterday...twice. :)

It just seems like an extra step that shouldn't be required.

I would like to see HTML files added to that list, as well.

    Thanks,

Phil, I'm a bit curious to know if your request relates in any way to the Propeller auto-documentation concept you've created - would our support of html uploads facilitate that effort?

Also, I haven't gotten back to your message yet because I need to give it the time it deserves.

    Thanks,

    Ken,

Yes, that's what prompted it. I was hoping to post the resultant HTML as an attachment, so people could just click on it and bring up the doc, as they would for a PDF. But I had to post it on my website instead.

    Thanks,
    -Phil

OK, Phil, we'll add html support right away. Supporting html uploads is truly to everybody's benefit. I'm still a bit blown away by the S2 auto-documenting example and need to review it a bit before I reply to you.

Phil, this issue made the e-mail rounds pretty quickly. There's too much concern within Parallax to allow html uploads. Users can put scripts and other browser-executable bad stuff in html files. We don't want the possibility of file uploads that send our users to bad places.

Unless we can easily figure out a safe way of managing this request I probably won't pursue it any further at this time.

You may now upload your .dxf file types.

    Ken,

I understand the concern. However, the risk to the user from an attached HTML file is no greater than if he followed a link to a malicious site that someone included a link to in a post. While there may be an enhanced risk to Parallax, tort-wise, if you were found to be hosting such a file, anything can be buried in ZIPs, which are allowed; so that argument goes away, too.

But I'm not going to belabor the point. Thanks for the effort!

As a counter point to the DXF extension, it (the DXF format) is terribly inefficient. I've seen compression rates approaching 90% when zipped.

    Just saying...
