Except for its greater length, the Spinneret will fit the extrusion designed for the MoBoStamp-pe. Perhaps Parallax could cut some longer extrusion pieces for the Spinneret. Now that they have a laser cutter, they could make some top panels and end plates for it, too.

That was my first thought when I saw this released. There are a few enclosures out there that are pretty close for a decent fit, but from a quick search I did, i didn't find a drop in. Not sure if Parallax has something in mind already, but a laser cut enclosure specifically for the Spinneret is possible. My opinion is always to find your enclosure before you design your PCB.

Get that laser warmed up Matt!

The form factor of the spinneret was designed specifically to fit in the extrusion that the MOBO uses. Parallax will offer it shortly.

After looking at the MOBO enclosure again, I see what you mean. The extrusion stock used to make it just needs to be cut to length for the Spinneret.

I am designing an enclosure to print on the Makerbot ABS printer. Have first iteration done.

How do you like the Makerbot ABS printer? I've been eyeballing the Thing-O-Matic..

The Makerbot is great. Really useful for creative and practical. I am teaching some design courses in 3D for Makerbot. They are close by to our community shop and studio so we have been having a good dialogue with them. Just trying some resurfacing and sanding on the prints today. For the money it is really the cats meow. Excited that we are going to be holding a Makerbot user group where my studio is.

If you look at my pictures here:

    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?130990-Using-the-Parallax-27979-4-x-20-LCD-with-the-spinneret

I printed the pieces holding the LCD and Spinneret on my MakerBot. I have 2 MakerBots. The advantage of the MakerBot is the number of resources you have available. I've been designing and printing on a MakerBot for over a year. I was at MakerFaire looking into the Thing-O-matic. A Mendel has almost 2 times the build area and 1/3 less the cost. There is more DIY to the Mendel so less direct experience but a huge community is out there. I will be getting a Mendel in the near future. I hope to have a Thing-O-matic too at some point. I will be printing a case to hold my project when it's finalized. Feel free to let me know if you have specific questions.

These are my first versions. Simple form fit. Later iterations will have various mounting points, covers and of course spinning wire wheels.

Those look nice. Did you make them with your Makerbot? If so, can you tel me: how does the extruder span the gap created by those square, vertical cutouts without the plastic sagging?

    Thanks,

Yes these are Makerbot made. It says in the documentation that it can span small gaps with out support structure. The size of the Ethernet jack was about 2cm and it was able to span the gap with no sagging. Been printing other irregular shapes recently and the support structure generated by Skeinforg has been great. New version of Replicator G has some new features to improve print quality. The openings in the sides of the MBed chasis were filled with support structure when printed.

Thanks, Luke. What does the support structure consist of, and how is it deposited?

I am using ABS right now. The print head I am using is capable of printing in PLA as well. Check out the videos on the makerbot site of the printer in action. It has x, y carriages on belts and the z on a threaded shaft. The print head is a heater block with extrusion tip fed by 4th stepper motor.

P.S. Sorry for the long delay in my reply. I missed this message. I need to turn on email notification in these threads.

On ebay i've got this nice metal enclosure fro the Spinneret. I've buy one, screw the Spinneret on a right size phenolic board, cut hole the front panel for RJ45 and USB power supply plug. I can put photo on request on the forum. Nice solid enclosure with some spare space under, over and on the back for tiny dauther board or components. :thumb:

On this link they sell it in pack of 8.

You can also search for this bigger enclosure "Aluminum Box Enclousure Case -4.33"*2.87"*1.85"(L*W*H)" at US $13.78

Any developments on this front for enclosures for the Spinneret? Is the MoBo the only offering from Parallax? Hardly anything IP rated out there?

I would bet that if we put our heads together we could come up with something. I have a couple that could use some type of enclosure also!!!!!!

So I ordered one of the cases from EBay. Once it arrives I will see how well it works out and then maybe make up a drawing so I can have it printed on a 3D Printer.

Cool NWCCTV, working on a few options also so I'll give some feedback when I try them .

I know this is off topic but wasn't there a thread discussing a new version of the Spinneret in the form factor of a Quickstart board a while back? What happened to that project?

Thanks for the link. Somehow I thought there was a board in development that was the size of a Quickstart board but contained both the Wiznet chip and a Propeller on a single board.

Edit: This is the project I was thinking of. Did this get cancelled?

I guess some times it is wise to measure what you are buying an item for. No way is the case I bought going to work for the spinneret. I guess I need to find something to use it for.
