Marking a forum as read -- the easy way

I've been doing things the hard way and gritting my teeth every time. To mark a forum as read without reading all of the new stuff in each thread, you can click on Forum Tools while in that forum and select "mark as read" from the drop-down box. Then go back to the main page and reload it. That's a lot of tedious mouse clicks.
The easy way, which I've discovered by accident, is just to double click the little bulletin board icon on the main page next to the forum you want to "clear".
