Hi,

Just to know if the Propeller Backpack

provides the ability to overlay text on a PAL video.

Thanks, Joe

    From a hardware standpoint, there should be no problem. The provided overlay software, however, does not accommodate PAL video.

    The hardware is capable of overlaying text on PAL video, but the current version of the overlay software is not and is intended for use with NTSC video only.

    You can use SV2000 Video IC, which generates NTSC and PAL compatible monochrome video, with the 9600,8,N,1 TTL level Normal or inverted serial mode. It's very easy to work with, as you can see at schematics, you need only a few passive components to get it work. I have just purchased one and I have plan to use it with BS2 as well.

    There is also MAX7465 on-screen display (OSD)
    468 x 545 - 23K
    372 x 284 - 21K

    The SV2000 is not an overlay controller, which is what the OP was inquiring about; i.e. it does not sync to an incoming video for the purpose of displaying text on top of it.

    @Phil
    You are quite right about that, I was just thinking about the SV2000 ability of generating text on TV, and not thinking about the video sync and...!
    The MAX7456, is capable of doing the job, but it use SPI interface not RS232.

    Thank you for reminding me : )

    Joe its to bad you don't have a NTSC signal. The PropBack-pack Over-lay video is excellent.

    It might be worth Your while to convert PAL to NTSC!

    Or Talk PhilPi into writing a PAL driver.
