Caps like this...

I have a hot air rework station but I can't seem to get these hot enough to desolder without messing up the pad on the PCB as I'm pulling them up. I can get one side free at a time...but not both sides simeltaneously. What's the trick? Do I need a different tip for my air station? My standard tip is 1/4" round tip. But I also have a square tip that I use for desoldering the propeller (forget what size that tip is).

I initially solder big stuff like this by doing the fry-pan method.

Thanks.

I use a good pair of snips and chomp it off and remove the leads one by one .
BUT for De soldering use a normal Iron and go back and forth between the 2 leads . 1 2 1 2 1 2 every other second . and use some LEAD solder ( if RoHS is not needed ) and it will drop the melt temp of the Lead free solder found On most new boards . Chip Quik is a MUCH better dropper but its not like you can get it at a the gas station .

If you add solder it can increce the thermal mass of each lead to the point where it can" hold" a Melted temp long enough to remove the component . still 1 2 1 2 1 2 is needed . but its easy up to 8 Pins or so .

if you have a hot air staition you just need to be patient and keep bombarding it with hot air until the pads are both molten and then use a pair of tweezers to pick it off. However if you can afford the $0.08 i would just cut it in half and use a regular iron.

I had to desolder some of these on a freeduino that was built with the wrong caps installed. I heated one side until it let go, lifted it free from the pad then, after letting that side cool a bit i desoldered the other.

I add solder to one side, heat it up, tilt up the part, then heat up the second side.
