R2-D2 project

Recently I've started helping a friend of mine finish a full sized R2-D2 robot. He's been working on the frame and mechanical stuff off and on for many years. I'm helping with the electronics and programming, and we're using a bunch of Parallax stuff (motor/wheel kit, hb-25s, Propeller boards).

Here's a link to my blog post with more info and pictures of the prototype phase: http://rpef.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-robot-project.html

Very cool project! It's a great idea to work together and share talents. Any thoughts on which microcontroller brain will be used?

The current plan is to use two Propeller boards.

One that will drive the main motors, manage sensors, and control some servos in the main body, and one that will do all the dome stuff, including lights/leds, controlling the rotation, and hopefully driving a projector.

    erco,
The guy I am working with on the project (Rich) built that frame. Some of the parts he managed to get via some R2 builders, and some he did himself or with friends. He's been working on it for years. We've got a few boxes of parts (resin molded, wood, etc.) that will go on and be painted to make it look almost exactly like the R2 from the movies.

I'll get some pictures posted of the various pieces that will eventually go on it.

It's something more along the lines of what you prefer. Custom built, instead of buying a kit.

Hey Roy, glad I caught view of the R2-D2 while surfing through the forums. Who wants to be normal? Not me! Enjoyed the pictures and explanation so far. I'm pleased that we can be part of your project - any chance we'll be seeing this R2-D2 at UPEW next year?

I will be bringing R2 to UPEW, for sure! He may not be done, but whatever we've got working by then will make a showing. I'll probably get my friend Rich to come to UPEW, also.
