Accuracy of iPhone / Android audio meter

I'm just wondering what is possible with those things? Anyone know if they are good for anything more than just a toy?

I just had a look at one of the Android ones:

It looked quite good. It's only 99p so I might try it, out of curiosity. From the reviews, whether it will work on particular hardware seems a bit hit and miss. I have a Dell Streak tablet.

The only problem I can think of is calibration; the Dawes sound level meter I used many years ago had a falling ball calibrator - lots of ball bearings in a special container that was turned upside down, whilst attached to the meter.
