Can this be used as a standard com-port to do other things, like updating firmware on a router?
Might be a dumb question, but i REALLY dont want to "brick" my old 24-port router :D

I guess two questions need to be asked. Which Parallax USB2SER part number?, (they make 2). And which router? Hopefully they have a PDF on the router.

    1: #28030
    2: HP ProCurve 2424M.
Antique, but it still gets the job done

I suppose this is the interesting part of the manual:

To connect a console to the switch, configure the PC terminal emulator as a
DEC VT-100 (ANSI) terminal or use a VT-100 terminal, and configure either
one to operate with these settings:
    • any baud rate from 2400 to 115200 (the switch senses the speed)
    • 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and flow control set to XON/XOFF
(Switch 1600M) or None (Switch 2424M).
    • For the Windows Terminal program, also disable (uncheck) the “Use
Function, Arrow, and Ctrl Keys for Windows” option.
    • For the Hilgrave HyperTerminal program, select the “Windows keys”
option for the “Function, arrow, and ctrl keys act as” parameter.

Should work just fine. Install the drivers before plugging in the USB,

I have used the standard Parallax USB-to-Serial adapter with a variety of devices that were designed for old pre-USB serial ports only. It works fine.
