Thank Jim Ewald (a.k.a. IT Guy). He did all the forum configuration, performed the attachment reload, and executed the post remigration -- all told, a huge undertaking. I just provided a Perl script to translate the old posts to the new BBcode and helped Jim coax my program through the rough spots it encountered.
Working with Jim these past couple months has been an absolute pleasure. I could not have done my part without him. The man is unflappable and can apparently handle any crisis with a steady hand, a Zen-like calm, and engaging good humor. It would be hard to imagine better qualities in someone with his job -- especially with all the plates he has to keep spinning and the balls he has to keep in the air. Thanks, Jim!
I'd also like to thank Ken Gracey, who instantly recognized the enormous value of the posts in the old forum, both to Parallax and to the forum community at large, and who pledged Parallax's support for my part in the remigration effort. Thanks, Ken!
And a big thanks, too, to the forum community for both your faith and patience while this process was going on in the background. And if anyone finds a post that they feel has not been migrated properly, please let me (well, actually Browser, who has the moderator status to fix things) know. There's still time to perform repairs before the old forum disappears for good.
Hey guys, don't let Phil minimize what was accomplished here. Phil's Perl script was the beating heart of the conversion process. What he was able to accomplish is extraordinary.
The old forums had an overriding philosophy that relied on the browser to fix all of the broken HTML. There were mismatched tags, broken BB codes and URLs that I really broke when I moved the old site to a new (old) domain. Some have seen the carnage first-hand. The script made sense of that mess and, with surgical precision, produced a refined output that you see on this site.
I will remain always grateful to Phil for caring enough to step up and work his magic on the horrible results we initially witnessed on the migration. I also have a new found appreciation for the membership and the efforts expended here to improve our collective knowledge of all things eclectic or electrical. Thanks to all of you who aired your concerns and criticisms.
There are more changes to come with this site. New skins, software updates to fix broken features and upgrades that will introduce new features such as blogging. Stay tuned....
Does that include the ability to change names? pi'd is my third one and now I'm getting tired of it...
Changing the account name isn't a listed feature. This forum software doesn't have separate, changeable display names like the old system had. It's not likely to change until vBulletin supports two name fields in the system.
Still, you can get the account name changed to a new one that isn't in use. Please send an email from the email address noted in your profile to it [at] parallax [dot] com and include the current and new account names. We can make that change for you.
