Nice idea. Here's how to make it better:
In both designs it looks like you'd have to fiddle with the bearings until you got them in the "just right" position before locking them down. I suggest you drill two holes in the plastic bases (at right angles to the axes of the bearings), tap the holes, and insert some screws that allow you to tweek the two halves until you get their separation just right. That way you can simply mount the bearings without too much thought, then tweak their spacing using the screw mechanism.
A very handy device.
