Nice idea. Here's how to make it better:
In both designs it looks like you'd have to fiddle with the bearings until you got them in the "just right" position before locking them down. I suggest you drill two holes in the plastic bases (at right angles to the axes of the bearings), tap the holes, and insert some screws that allow you to tweek the two halves until you get their separation just right. That way you can simply mount the bearings without too much thought, then tweak their spacing using the screw mechanism.

I had a summer job while in university at a company that had a similar jig. It had 3 bearings so both 0.3" and 0.6" dips could be handled. The plastic seperators were tapered so the leads could be spread to 0.3" or 0.6" before reaching the bearings.

A very handy device.

I used to have a device that used a similar technique; I think I bought it from RS Components. It worked with 0.3" and 0.6" DILs.

I've owned one of those Jameco gizmos most of my adult life. They're super easy to use: just pop the IC in the slots, squeeze the sides, et voila, straight pins. Frankly, though, I'm not too fond of using it for soldering. An IC with straightened pins won't stay in the board when you flip it upside down to solder.

I like the use of a nice static generating piece of plastic in the first shot. The second jig seems a little more IC friendly.
