Sir i want to do a project on autonomous ground vehicle.(on a small scale)........ I do not know from where to start and how to go about it.

I want my bot to go on nearly between rough and a smooth surface.I am really worried about my project.
I just want a little guidance on how to start and how i should equip myself before starting it.

Sounds like you're just starting out and you may lack a firm grasp of how difficult it is to achieve what you want. That makes it hard to tell you where to start. You need to do some legwork investigating autonomous navigation, dead reckoning, odometry, detecting obstacles, collision avoidance, path planning, etc.

That said, I designed & built a cheap, simple, accurate robot that you could teach a path by driving it and have it follow it automatically after that. It only looked at wheel rotations to measure distance and turns. No obstacle or collision sensors. That's a reasonable place for you to start.

Parallax offers a Digital Encoder kit for the Boe-Bot.

Be sure to look at Applying the Boe-Bot Digital Encoder Kit.
