i wanted to use a laser sensor for 3D mapping but they are so expensive. so i look at other options here and i wanted to know what you guys think. im still very new to this but i have plenty of time to do my research. sould i go with the ultrasonic sensor or the image sensor for an autonomous R/C car? i understand you can use both for mapping clear areas for movement but which one could i get a more reliable system from?

Ultrasound provides a very coarse image and is better for object avoidance. Similarly, you can use IR LEDs and modulated IR detectors for distance sensing and object avoidance. For more detailed mapping, you'd be better off with some kind of coarse digital camera chip. Several companies make versions of the CMUcam. Do a web search for that and look at the available documentation.

those look like they would suite the purpose perfectly. they do sort of push my hobby budget out a little though. would the TSL1401 Linescan Imaging Sensor from this website cover the same basic function of those sensors? i would assume it would take more work to create but it seems more as if it is more along the lines of what i can spend. also just to note i am new to programming anything but i have gotten very good at creating circuits. will it be something a new comer could pull off, with a little research and book cracking?

also thanks for the help and clarification.

You'll find a good description of the Sharp family of IR distance measuring modules at http://www.acroname.com/robotics/info/articles/sharp/sharp.html#e8

Then, you'll find that they're cheaper to buy at http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Store.jsp

If you think that's amazing, take a look at the 3D laserscanner at http://www.david-laserscanner.com/

I bought the line laser but I need a new camera to try it out. If it works like they say, it seems like it would be possible to use a similar setup on a mobile robot (with a nice PC on board) to 3D scan and map the environment around the robot.

But that's a project for another day...
