Is it possible to messure distance in cm/ft with a IR reciever?

Interesting. I learned something..... My answer was "No" but you've proved me wrong.
Without researching it in-depth, the intensity of the reflected light is inversely proportional to the distance, of course it also depends on the material reflected off of as well, so I'd imagine you have to calibrate an Ir distance sensor for each material. I could be wrong though.
Laser measurement can be had at much longer distances because the beam is more focused, a.k.a the Ir is dispersed in a wider angled "cone"
That's my understanding. If you are going to build a sensor, look up "Ir modulation".... You'll need that to filter ambient Ir sources.
