signature length limit....is odd

I am trying to update my signature. I added some stuff, and I got "Your signature cannot be longer than 1000 characters including BB code markup.". So I made it less than 1000 characters, but then I got "Your signature cannot be longer than 500 characters excluding BB code markup."

I don't know how long my message is (including BB code -- because they are hidden in the WYSIWYG format of the signature editor). From just random deletions of my signature, it seems pretty short. Why would you be allowed 500 "visible" characters, and 500 BB code characters! that seems like a lot of characters that aren't actual content. Seems like it should maybe be 800 (or 900) excluding BB code, and 1000 including. That feels more reasonable.

If I wanted to just bypass the whole thing I could just post an image in my signature with the stuff I want, but then it doesn't conform to the page very well.

The short answer is that the current settings for the signature are quite likely the default settings. I need to take a look at how the various settings interact and then I'll be able to provide a reasonable answer.
