So I'm told... (weird device)

Someone told me (I trust him for the most part) that a couple decades ago, there were these devices (large, from what I gather) that could take "stray" frequencies in the air (primarily 60Hz from overhead power) and either drive it to ground or transpose it into a different, higher frequency.

I am trying to wrap my head around how such a device would function. I could possibly see detecting the stray voltage with an antenna (or something), then outputting it's own voltage into the air in the opposite phase, thus negating the source. But this would only work in one direction (view simple [read "lame"] diagram).

It would also require a massive amount of power.

This person seems to think it works in a different manor. It uses a (seemingly) large crystal to negate the 60Hz and generate other frequencies.

Any ideas on how this would work, or maybe someone knows what it is, or what it is called, I can look it up myself.

What you are sort of describing is what is called a "Tesla Magnifier" ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnifying_transmitter

The 'receiver' is tuned to resonate at the 60Hz, while at the same time the receiver has other resonant components capable of resonating at higher frequency harmonics of the 60Hz. As a result the receiver also becomes a transmitter.

As far as blocking the signal out, the only way would be by absorption from the receiver...

The voltage on the grid lines is about 2700V at 2 Amps. From the main generator it's alot more but I'm not for certain.

Well with an untuned longwire antenna and a rectifier you can catch a few milliwatts from the world's low-frequency radio stations, and with a steady power source like that you can pretty much whatever you want, as long as it only takes a few milliwatts.

Hmmm... superposition says maybe, along that exact axis. But i would have thought the radiation from the power line falls off at a 1/r^2 rate, and the (point) transmitter more line 1/r^3...

Perhaps the secret is in the "large" device or crystal. If it were say, building sized, and metal covered, it may block the path enough to just work.

To admins: I mistakenly put this in Propeller forum, meant to put it in Sandbox. Move it if you can.

Thanks for the quick response, I will be able to read more on it tomorrow, and try to get more information about it too.

    What's the Propeller angle here?

Shouldn't the Propeller Forum be renamed to "Whatever"?

I don't see the point of having things separated if the organization is flouted.

I'm not sure why the universe works like that. It just seems to happen every once in a while. Occasionally a flash of brilliance comes even unto yon Outer Darkness.

Uh, the crystal tesla thingy will be monitored by a propeller?
No, as said before, I clicked the wrong new topic button. I am active in both forums, I do try to keep the organization, honest. As requested before, move this please.

No worries. PJ is just a little touchy sometimes. Smart people are like that. :)

    Tubular;
EM radiation would fall off with the square of the reciprocal of distance from a point source, but from a line source, I think it would just fall off to the reciprocal.

Thanks, Pharseid. I was getting around to looking it up as I wasn't totally sure...

Not exactly what you are looking for, but you may find the following interesting. Go about 1/2 way down the page to "How the Thing worked"...

This from the guy who started a discussion on toilet paper???

    Bobb,

This idea is more common than you think. It happens all the time at higher frequencies.

Look up "snap diode." Mathematically, an impulse function contains all frequencies.

In microwave applications, a snap diode is often followed by a comb filter to select the desired frequency.

Yeah, PJ was just trying to make a point about people posting non apropos stuff in the Propeller Forum. But, you know, we grabbed that toilet paper and ran with it anyway. :)

And from what I read, that conversation just kept on rolling and rolling and rolling....

Apparently it wiped out all other urgent topics for quite some time.

More then likely, it flushed everything else until it got flushed out of our systems!

I have wondered if ambient RF could be rectified and made into a power source. I think RFID demonstrates there's not enough to be useful.

I'm looking for a way to get rid of interference altogether. But turning it input power would be very green of you!
