Thats a great introduction to Viewport, thanks Nick.
I've have the $60 version and have played to about the level where your review ends. But having a guide such as yours certainly makes it easier to know what to expect, and to get up and running with confidence.
@Tubular -
Thanks! I tried to write a review / walkthrough so the reader can get a feel for the program, not just hear my opinion.
I think the next step in ViewPort is using the optional objects (OpenCV, Fuzzy Logic, etc) - these are pretty cool, but less for debugging and more for project development, so I didn't cover them as thoroughly. I bought the $90 version, so I couldn't review the dev kit / designer tool.
The best thing about ViewPort is you can try it FREE and see what you think. For me, it saved a ton of time when I was doing the IR transceiver object - I didn't need the debugger, but the LSA & DSO views were awesome.
Also, an update - the newest beta has a vastly improved IDE - integrated catalina support is really cool and there are a few things that make it better than the Propeller Tool. It did have a few bugs, but Hanno is actively updating ViewPort, so I suspect they'll be fixed. I can definitely see ViewPort replacing the Propeller Tool as my default IDE down the road.
One thing I haven't given enough of a look is jazzed's LSA tool - it might be enough for most users. I'll have to review that when I get a chance.
Thanks Nick for the review. Glad you've already seen all the improvements I've added in the last several months- I'm very proud of the new code editor and overall quality. I'm using ViewPort on all my projects- when I hit a snag I fix it...
