This may still be an open question. Any edits you perform to the title will show up in the thread view. But last time I tried, they did not show up in the forum view.
I think I finally understand the logic behind the title editing. When you first start a thread, the title you give your post, also becomes the title given to the thread. But, when you change the title during a subsequent edit, you're only editing the post title, not the thread title, since they became two different things the instant the thread was first posted.
It's rather annoying behavior, though, since it prevents changing the thread title to alert users to updates or to correct typos. Hopefully, this is behavior that can be changed.
The "plus side" of this is that you can change the subject of individual posts to reflect changes in the discussion, or "sub points" of the topic. (as in this post's subject line)
While this is nice (if used), I agree that a way to edit the thread subject, at least by the thread creator, would be nice.
Gang, I was just in the test forum foolling around, and it appears that the "Thread Subject" is taken from the subject of the first post, so that when you change the subject of the first post (only the original poster or moderator can), the title in the forum list seems to be changed.
[replace/augment with]
The above only appears to work for a short period of time, after which the subject line seems to be "locked in place". You can still change the subject of the top post, but the thread subject no longer updates.
[end edit'
@Humando: In order to change the subject of a given post, you need to "Edit" the post, and then use the "Go Advanced" button.
Unless there's a solution to this issue (and there may not be) I would suggest anticipating changes and adding, "For latest updates, click here," to the thread title when you create it. Then forumistas will be able to see any edits to the title of the first post when they click on the thread title.
Yeah, it's not the greatest solution, but it is a reasonable workaround.
The 'official' answer from vBulletin is that the subject line can be changed / updated by the member who originated the thread but only within a number of minutes specified in the site configuration. That setting is defaulted to five (5) minutes. It has just been increased to 30 minutes. I do not know what the upper limit is. We quite likely don't need to find out.
Typically, this can be a matter of days, months, or even years. The way subject edits are most often used is to flag when originally posted software has been updated, product specs or availability have changed, etc. I would suggest increasing the limit to 100 years (essentially infinity) if that's possible.

The ability to edit the subject line comes in handy when the author determines that their thread has reached an end, and no more responses are necessary. I've done such when my requests for information have resulted in an answer and I want to end the request, which notifies forum readers that the request is closed (solved, found, completed, etc.).
Not sure what happened that makes my results different, but I was just able to change a thread title from last month with no problem. Is it possible for me since I am a moderator?

John, thanks for the info. However, I don't want to change the subject of each post. I want to change the subject of the entire thread.
This is important for edit, updates, revisions, adding clarity and providing new information.

I found it very valuable to update the thread subject, to announce latest fixes/additions without having to start a brand new thread.
Can't you set it to "indefinite"? That would solve the problem...
I would like to add my vote to PhiPi's suggestion (100 years / indefinite). Or at least whatever the maximum allowed is!
... Please if this has already been done and I just need pointing in right direction, please point me !! Thanks
DJ
Either you have found an edit link that I couldn't see, or your supreme status provides you with supreme power.
..so if we were all moderators... that would solve it...
