Can Corning Glassware be used as a soldering surface?

edited 2010-08-28 06:49 in General Discussion
We were throwing out some glass hot plates made from Corning Glassware at work used in chemistry and I salvaged a couple. Can it be used as a soldering surface? One is like a dish with an lid or edge and the other one looks like a mouse pad with rubber legs.

Something conductive, like one of those special rubber mats, would make a lot more sense.

If I cover it with aluminum then it would probably work as a protective surface? I just don't want to burn anything.

Yes, it will work fine as far as the heat of soldering. No anti-static properties though.

I just use a red brick if I am concerned about too much heat. For anti-static, it might be best if the circuit board was held in a device that was adjustable to angle and that the soldering iron itself was properly grounded.

Mostly, I need something that will protect my table top from being ruined by burns. A 1 foot square ceramic tile is another handy choice. But a chunk of plywood does well if you don't mind it getting a bit funky.
