I'd like a very cheap and small sm chip with several GB of flash on it.
Something a uC can easily use.
Micro SD cards are too big.

Awhile back there was an article by Bunnie (the guy behind the Chumby) about investigating a batch of flaky uSD cards his Chinese assemblers had received. In with the fascinating stuff about dissolving the cases off several cards he revealed that the raw chips used in the uSD go on the bulk market for about the same price as finished uSD cards -- you basically get the uSD controller and case for free.

Considering the amount of work the uSD controller goes through to do wear leveling I think I'd stick with uSD cards rather than trying to work directly with 4-level flash chips that can survive barely 100,000 write cycles per cell.

I decided not to wait for the prices to fall and just installed a new ssd in my desktop - what a difference!
