I wanted to introduce my Son Matthew.:D He just joined the forums under the screen name Matthew B. He has completed chapter 1 of WAM and moving on to chapter two. When he completes WAM I hope to be able to buy him a BOE-BOT for graduation. I don't mind saying he is a chip off the old block:). Matthew will be starting 5th grade this week.

If you get a chance say hi!

Tony

Welcome Matthew! You sound like a chip off the old block, I wish Basic Stamps were around when I was in 5th grade! Heck, when I was your age, the first rocks had just hardened, so those were my only toys. You are WAY ahead of me, so seize the day, Sport!

Keep us updated how your Boe Bot project goes.

    Matthew B.,

Welcome! By the way - I am even older that erco! Robotics is a great hobby.

My son is on the forums as "ScribblerKart." He starts 5th grade tomorrow! We worked on the WAM kit this summer too. He really loves the Scribbler and like me can't wait for the Scribbler 2.

Glad you are here and I look forward to your questions and posts!

I have a new idea for graduation, Matthew gets a BOE-BOT and Dad gets the new scribbler. We'll I am the teacher. I wonder how long before that changes and I'm asking him to help me with my code?

Welcome to the forums Matthew B.

I wish I got the early start in this exciting field like you are. I have messed around in electronics since I was 12 and started learning the Stamp at age 28. I just started learning the Propeller(very cool, you will have to try it out).

I have a son, his name is Matthew also and I look forward introducing him to micro's and electronics. He's only 2 months right now...so I have awhile yet.

    Again, welcome to the forums!!

Welcome to the forums, Matthew! My son is heading into sixth grade and just getting a feeling for Parallax products. We've used them in a bunch of science projects at his school, too.

We're taking a break from robotics and microcontrollers right now and plan on building a gas-powered R/C swamp buggy. There's a nearby pond where we like to hang out and it looks like the perfect place for such a boat.

Kids get special attention on these forums, especially when they've got an interest in the subject. You can get totally free advice on these forums from some really smart and motivated people.

If you're interested in electronics then you'll have these skills as a hobby or profession for your whole life.

My staff does a great job making sure this is a good place for kids and adults alike so I think you'll be quite comfortable around here.

    Sincerely,

    Ken Gracey

Welcome aboard Matthew!! As others have said this is a great place to ask questions, and have open honest discussions toward useful solutions.

Welcome to the forums Matthew B.

Tony B., you can justify any robot purchase by saying "it's educational." I've used that line for a Scribbler and a Lego NXT, while getting praise for being a good father who spends time with his children! I don't think it would work to get a Quadrover though.

Welcome to the Parallax Forums, Matthew. I date back to the Big Bang. That happened late one night when my desk light blew up! I wish you a lot of fun with WAM and all your projects.

    Welcome!

I wished I had those stuff when I was in 5th grade, but unfortunately, all I had got was transistors, capacitors, resistors and LED to experiment with.

Up until when I reached 21, when I had my own bank card, some money I collected, I ordered some logic-gates and some more components. It is there when I got myself exposed to the world of microcontrollers. :D

All we had were valves (tubes) and germanium diodes when I was 11, in 1953. I built myself a crystal set and my older brother bought me an ex-WW2 HF tank receiver for listening on the ham radio bands. We tried to build a light-following robot with a photocell, a double-triode valve, a motor and some gears. When I was about 16 and transistors became available, I started playing about with them.

Whoa, you must be the oldest in this place!

Man, I feel I'm too young when you talked about valves and diodes! When I was born, there were already computers and early generation of microcontrollers!

Computers were around then; I remember seeing one in operation at the Science Museum in London in 1951, playing Nim against visitors. I wanted to play it but there was an enormous queue and my parents got fed up and took me home. It was a special computer built by Ferranti for the 1951 Exhibition.

Actually, I think it's pretty amazing how these Parallax forums link people of all ages, interests, and experience levels. An older person can help a younger person and vice versa. The atmosphere is uber-friendly and encouraging. I have special respect for people who are just starting out and want to learn the basics that many of us take for granted. What a neat way to wade into a hobby that seems so impossibly daunting!

I think being born in the computer era after man had landed on the Moon is really cool. Do you actually believe man walked on the Moon? :)
