Mark Forums Read (again)

OK, while I'm logged in there are no problems. It all works as expected.

Once I log out all forums seem to be randomly marked to have (no) posts. The link on the front page Mark Forums Read has no effect.

While not being logged in I can enter a forum and mark it as read from the quick link submenu. Going to the front page then shows it as read. Logging in and immediatly out again reverts the forum I just marked to have unread posts (again).

Is that a known effect, something that can be fixed easily? Is it by any chance timezone related? It certainly is annoying!

Not sure here but if you are not logged in, I would not expect the forum to "remember" anything that you did. I effect you are a random anonymous user. While the keystrokes for marking a forum "read" will work, the system will not save that state unless you are Logged in.

BTW, this is just an assumption of how it works, not actual knowledge :D

@Searider has the right idea. As an anonymous user, the forums will not track what you have read. When you are logged in, the site can now attach posts read data to your account so you don't suffer from a terminal case of deja vu Think of it as an incentive to mecome a member.

OK, I guess I'll have to learn to live with it. It just came up because the old forum simply didn't show any indicators (all marked read when logged out). Thanks.

    kuroneko,

Log off the forum, then clear all your cookies. For a couple days, the "last read" stuff on the new forum was cookie-based, and it still tracked unread posts after logging off. But that was changed to the current userid-based tracking system. I'm thinking that, if any of those old cookies are around, you may be seeing their lingering effects.

Log off the forum, then clear all your cookies.

That did the trick. Thanks Phil.
